While there are sections filled with energy and excitement, stunning declarations of faith, glorious acts of salvation and moments of pure black comedy, the book of Judges is also one of the darkest, goriest and most depressing books of the Bible.
Having only partially conquered the Promised Land God had given them, Israel descended into a downward spiral of apostasy as they kept turning away from God that ended in depravity. 
Yet despite his people’s repeated rejection of him, God in his mercy raised up judges who delivered them from their enemies.  However, each of these ‘heroes’ are deeply flawed; none are the king Israel needs.  That would take another 1000+ years…
